Kristal Lopez | Wild Drift Ceramics
Kristal Lopez is an Austin-born ceramic artist and first-generation college graduate whose work is rooted in curiosity, color, and the joy of making with her hands. She was first introduced to clay during her senior year of high school, but it wasn’t until 2021 that she returned to ceramics as a creative outlet during a time when she needed distraction and grounding.
What began as a quiet practice quickly grew into a deep appreciation for the craft, the clay community, and the endless creativity that comes from working with earth and fire. Growing up, Kristal never saw herself as an artist. She disliked painting, drawing, and even thought her handwriting was terrible. Ceramics was the first place where creativity felt natural, almost as if Mother Nature itself was guiding the process.
Her work eventually evolved into what she calls Wild Drift Ceramics, inspired by her love of marbling clay and building layers of color within glaze. The movement of those colors reminded her of a wild drift of pigment flowing through the surface, giving the collection its name.
Kristal primarily creates functional pottery including mugs, matcha bowls, tumblers, drink-ware, vases, and the occasional lidded jar. Each piece is meant to be both practical and playful, bringing small moments of beauty into everyday routines.
Through Wild Drift Ceramics, Kristal continues to explore color, movement, and form while staying connected to the craft and community that helped her discover a creative side she never knew she had.
She hopes you enjoy the work as much as she enjoys making it.
