Sofia Payne Ceramics

Sofia Payne is a Mexican American artist that was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas by her maternal family. From an early age, Sofia found joy in drawing and painting. Animals, particularly horses (she spent her summers with family in Mississippi that ran a boarding stable) were the primary subject matter of her work. Encouraged by her family, she continued to practice drawing and painting, taking what art classes in school were available and teaching herself Adobe Photoshop for digital painting purposes.
As a nontraditional student, Sofia attended Southwestern University in her late twenties, graduating with a Bachelor of Studio Arts with a focus on Ceramics in 2018. During her time at Southwestern, Sofia learned more of the Latin American side of her paternal heritage, discovering a wealth of art and history that had not been taught in her youth. Inspired, Sofia based her graduating show, “Hidden Tails”, an exhibit celebrating indigenous mythology of our world, finding her desire to bring more visibility to these amazing stories.
Now in Kyle, Texas, Sofia continues to work in ceramics in a backyard studio. Having participated in juried art markets in central Texas, she now wants to explore other avenues of sharing her art. Sofia’s work has been exhibited in Austin City Hall of Austin, Tx, the Inspired Minds Gallery in Buda, Tx, the Nancy Fife Cardozier Gallery of University of Texas Permian Basin and the Dogseye Gallery of San Marcos.
